Tuna Checco, 65, lifelong resident of Hibbing, died Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing. He was born December 13, 1959, to Ernie and Mary Ann Checco in Hibbing. Tuna attended and graduated from Hibbing Schools. Tuna was co-owner of Checco’s Tavern in Hibbing for 40 years alongside his brother, Tim. Tuna was known for a life full of personality, he was bigger than life! One of his favorite things to do was spend time at the Deer Shack up at Side Lake. He also loved snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, camping, swimming, cooking, especially BBQ throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by his siblings, Joe (Gail) Checco, Cathy (Dave) Thul, Tim (Kristine) Checco, and Lizz (Doug) Egerdahl, all of Hibbing, along with his many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Mary Ann Checco.
Funeral services for Tuna will be 11:30 am, Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Fr. Bill Skarich will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:30 am funeral Mass at the church on Friday. Tuna’s family would like to express a sincere thank you to Guardian Angels, for the years of care that he received during his stay. A private interment will be held in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing.
