Roy E. Olson

Roy Eugene Olson, age 82, of Chisholm, MN, passed away peacefully at home on August 24, 2026. He was born on April 17, 1944, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Ethel Olson. Roy lived briefly in Fergus Falls, Aurora, Foxhome, Eveleth, and Virginia before moving to NHS in Chisholm.

Roy was a soft-spoken man who had a great sense of humor and a contagious smile. Some of the things that brought joy to Roy’s life were decorating for the holidays, hanging pictures he colored on his door, going on rides at the fair, watching western movies, and horror movies that put a smile on his face. Roy enjoyed singing with his staff; two of his favorite songs were “You Are My Sunshine” and “Jesus Love Me.” Roy loved to keep his treasure close, loading his pockets with everything that would fit, then arranging them in his room so he could keep an eye on them. Roy loved sitting in the sunshine with his housemates, fishing, with his housemates with Angling Horizons, and playing baseball at the Miracle League Ball Field. Roy worked at East Range DAC in Eveleth briefly in 1978, then returned in 1990, only recently retiring. He enjoyed his work and spending time with his staff and friends. Roy was loved by everyone who met him.

Roy is preceded in death by his mother, Ethel, and Special Friend and housemate, Mary Swatek.

A Celebration of Life will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing, MN. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the celebration. Interment will take place at a later date at the Tordenskjold Lutheran Cemetery in Underwood, MN.
