Listen to Obituary

Robert Keith Vance, 70, of Hibbing, MN, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, after his brothers had been at his side. Robert, affectionately known to many as "Bob Cat," was born in Hibbing on July 1, 1955, to his mother, Doris Lassila. Bob was raised by his parents, Joseph and Doris Basta, and attended Hibbing schools before starting work in the mines. Not long after, Bob settled in with the City of Hibbing as an equipment operator and retired from there after over 30 years of service. Bob was a caretaker at heart, always looking after others, including his father and mother, who was able to stay at home until she was 90. He also looked after a home for family friends on Lake Vermilion, where he loved spending time, and cared for his significant other, Nellie McGinn, for over 20 years. Bob was a collector and had an impressive accumulation of WWI, WWII, Native American, and assorted military souvenirs and memorabilia. He had a great appreciation for these things. Bob also enjoyed collecting different guns and target shooting. He loved being outdoors, snowshoeing, camping in his over 20-feet-tall teepee, and appreciating all types of wildlife, whether in nature or right in his backyard. Bob was known for his easygoing nature and kindness. He was gentle and good-natured, he wouldn't hurt a fly or badmouth a soul. He will be missed.

Bob is survived by his brothers Larry (Cindy) Vance and Kevin Vance, partner and fiance' Nellie, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Sheryl Vance.

A graveside memorial will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.  Wear your favorite flannel in honor of Bob Cat!
