Peggy L. (Johnson) Kemp

Peggy L. (Johnson) Kemp, 86, longtime resident of Hibbing passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Minnesota Veterans Home - Silver Bay, MN. She was born June 10, 1940, to Wesley and Loretta (James) Johnson in Ironwood, MI. Peggy graduated from Hibbing High School in 1958. Peggy united in marriage on October 6, 1961, to Thomas Kemp. She was employed at a Telco Credit Union in the Twin Cities, and later worked various retail jobs. After moving to Hibbing in 1975, Peggy attended Mesabi Range Vo-Tech School from 1976-78, completing a two-year program to become an LPN. She was employed at Hibbing General Hospital, Central Mesabi Medical Center, Mesabi Regional Medical Center and Fairview Range Hospital in the surgery department, also working in the Behavioral Health Unit, retiring after 20 years of service. She loved her family and was an outgoing person, Tom stated that Peggy had a “bubbly” personality and was known as the life of the party.
Peggy loved crafting for holidays and seasons, often painting wooden figurines created by Tom. She also enjoyed making ceramics, traveling, and attending hockey games. She was an avid reader and dedicated her time to volunteering with Meals on Wheels, the local soup kitchen, and the Salvation Army.
Peggy was an active lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing. She was at one time, a trustee on the church council, worked in the kitchen, and made pasties for the church for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Kemp Sr., Hibbing, MN, her four children, Terri (Mike) Kern, Gilbert, MN, Thomas (Danette) Kemp Jr., Bigfork, MN, Tracy (Sam) Kemp, Hermantown, MN, and Tim (Janelle) Kemp, Hibbing, MN, her brother, James Johnson, Cold Spring, MN, sister, Sally Peterson, Buffalo, MN, 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Loretta (James) Johnson.
Funeral services for Peggy will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing. John Scheuer will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until the 11:00 am memorial service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Minnesota Veterans Home - Silver Bay, MN, 56 Outer Drive, Silver Bay, MN, 55614. Peggy’s family would like to send a sincere and heart felt thank you to the past and present staff of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay for the loving and exceptional care that was given to Peggy over the last 19 years. They will not be forgotten. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
