Mary A. Walters

Mary A. Walters, 89, a longtime resident of Hibbing, passed away at her home with her daughter by her side on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Over the past 10 ½ months, she fought a courageous battle against cancer with grace and dignity. She was born March 24, 1937, to Marijan and Kata (Sarich) Budimir in Gary, New Duluth, MN. Mary graduated from Morgan Park High School, class of 1956. She then married the love of her life, Laverne Walters, on June 25, 1960. Together, they moved to Hibbing and raised two children, Ken and Lynn. Mary was a homemaker and a member of the Hibbing Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Hibbing Historical Society, owner and operator of KLM Creations, and a member of the Northland Craft Association.

She loved to travel, shop, and go out to eat with her besties, Gerri Guye and Barb Boreen. She also enjoyed attending Hibbing High School hockey games with Barb Knoop, along with following her grandson’s hockey career. Her love for her grandchildren was only surpassed by her newly born great-grandson, Weston! She loved to bake for her friends and brought joy to everyone she knew.

She had a strong faith in God and was a proud member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. Mary’s family would like to thank everyone at the Radiation Oncology and Infusion Center at Fairview for the outstanding care she received during her time of need. They would also like to thank Janet Curtis, who aided with her care.

Mary is survived by her children, Ken (Kimala) Walters, Rosemount, MN, Lynn (Robert Timpane) Walters, Hibbing, MN, her grandchildren, Ryan Walters, Apple Valley, MN, Kennedy (Dalton) Scurr, Goodhue, MN, great-grandson, Weston Scurr, also of Goodhue, her brothers, Danny (Alice) Budimir, Duluth, MN, and Frank (Rene) Budimir, Lander, WY, sister, Kathryn Clark, Ontonagon, MI, and her sister-in-law, Valerie Budimir, Duluth, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Laverne, sisters Helen and Matilda, and five brothers, Mike, John, Anthony, Robert, and Steve.

Funeral services for Mary will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. Visitation will be from 11:30 am to 1 pm, and the Rev. Fr. Bill Skarich will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
