He is survived by his children, Donna Torres, Marc Carter and Mary Gilbertson. His grandchildren are Mathew Gilbertson, Anna Gilbertson, Jaime Gilbertson, Ethan Torres and Dillon Gilbertson.
Marcus was born October 22, 1954 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. He attended grade school in Halstad and at Balmoral Rural, then Pelican Rapids High School. He graduated from Silver Bay High School. As a child, Marcus was in Glee Club, a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) Club and 4-H Club. At an early age, Marcus became an outdoor enthusiast, hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles. His first motorcycle was a Bridgestone. After high school, Marcus served in the U.S. Army as a field wireman where he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood and then Fort Carson, just as his father had been.
In 1975, he married Julie Knaffla. They had three children: Donna, Marc and MaryLee. As a father of three, he worked hard as a taconite maintenance mechanic to provide for his family while also pursuing higher education. In 1987, Marcus earned an Electronics degree from Hibbing Vo-Tech.
Marcus enjoyed the outdoors tremendously all throughout his life with hunting, fishing, trapping, motorcycle and snow mobile riding. In his prime, Marcus owned a small business where he raised ringneck pheasants, bob whites, chuckers, rabbits, fox, chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks. This gave him much pride, joy and means of trade and profit. He was known by his family to have a substantial collection of tools and mechanics in his garage at all times and loved working outside fixing or repairing old motors.
Marcus loved traveling in the later part of his life. You'd find him and his best friend Scott Hull reminiscing over a cold drink, laughing and loving life. Marcus often mentioned that Scott was like another brother to him. All throughout his life Marcus owned and trained dogs, he was his dogs best friend. Of them Abby, Sabrina and Sassy traveled with him on every one of lives adventures oftentimes in a RV camper from camp ground to camp ground.
He will be missed greatly and held dearly in the memories of so many that knew him in his life.
May God bless you and keep us near until we meet again.
