James Philip Montcalm (Jim from Tuffys), age 79 of Hibbing, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2026, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. He was born in Hibbing, MN, to James and Theresa (Pascuzzi) Montcalm on October 1, 1946.
Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the US Air Force from 1964 to 1968. In 1969, Jim started his 40-year career as a cook working at Tuffys in Hibbing, he would continue working until its closure in 2010. Jim was joined in marriage to Carole Lahti on June 19, 1976. In his free time, Jim enjoyed doing puzzles, being outside, cruising around town, and listening to music, it was a rare occurrence for him to be without his radio on. One of his favorite family traditions was making homemade gnocchi for traditional Christmas Eve dinner. He was the best at telling jokes and stories and would always know the punchline before you said it. Most of all, Jim was a loving father and grandfather.
Jim is survived by his children, Patrick (Kiley) Montcalm, Jamie (Daniel) Montcalm, Jay (Stacie) Montcalm, brothers-in-law, George and Robert Lahti, grandchildren, Alex (Josh), Nolan, Hadley, Addison, Rose, and Zane.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Theresa, wife Carole, brother David, and daughter Carrie.
Per Jim's request, there will be no services held.
Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing, MN.
