Grace Louise Zbacnik, age 91, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, July 16. Grace was born on February 13, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota, to Domenico and Mary Montelioni. She married Fred Zbacnik, on August 17, 1951, and together they raised five boys in Clover Addition. Grace worked for many years at the Hibbing Hospital, where she was known for her dedication and warmth. After retiring, she and Fred spent many joyful winters in Arizona, close to two of their sons and their families. Family was the center of Grace’s world. As the true matriarch, she led by example—with kindness, strength, and unwavering love. We all strive to be more like Gracie. Her optimism was contagious, and her generosity unmatched. She delighted in family gatherings, where her laughter lit up the room. Everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing her has a “Gracie story” that brings a smile to their face. Grace never forgot a birthday or special occasion (which she had to remember many), sending thoughtful cards that made loved ones feel remembered and cherished. She had a zest for life and enjoyed many hobbies, including playing cards, bocce ball, bean bags, and dominoes. But most of all, she loved being surrounded by family and friends—and feeding them, whether they were hungry or not.
Grace is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Zbacnik; her parents; and her sisters and brothers-in-law: Virginia Ronchetti (Oliver), Phyllis Sterle (Louis), Gloria Corradi (Jon), and John George.
She is survived by her five sons: Fred (Deb), Craig (Pam), Gary, Bryan (Shelley), and Patrick (Michaelle); her 12 beloved grandchildren: Derikk, Jessica, Anna, Domenico, Carla, Jon, Nicole, Danielle, Anthony, Jennifer, Nicholas, and Christopher; and her 19 treasured great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored. She is also survived by her sister, Doretta George, Clara Kearney, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Fairview Hospice Team—especially Miranda, Kylah, and Taylor—for their compassionate care. In memory of Grace, donations may be made to Fairview Hospice.
