George A. Cicmil 94 of Side Lake, Mn passed away on November 25th, 2024. George was born in Carson Lake, Mn on May 3rd, 1930 to Yugoslavian immigrant parents John Sr. and Senia (Mazich) Cicmil and was number eight of nine children.
George went to Hibbing High School graduating in 1948 and then served in the Korean War. Upon his return, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and received his B.S. in Business Administration. While at UMD, he met Anita Carol Lee, a tall, long-legged girl swinging upside down from a tree. He said I must get to know that girl! After graduating from UMD, George moved back to Hibbing and held a few jobs before becoming the Business Manager at ISD 701 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1991 after 33 years. George and Anita were married June 29th, 1957 and had 61 years together until Anita’s passing in 2018. In 1993 they moved to the Side Lake area to enjoy their retirement living on the lake. What a great place not only for them but also a place for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to visit. George and Anita also spent 25 years wintering in Lake Havasu, AZ enjoying good times with their many friends.
George was a Charter member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Hibbing, past member of Rotary, Elks, Mesaba Country Club and was a board member of Merchants & Miners State Bank as well as past President of PERA. He was also a member of the Mississippi Hilton, the legendary hunting and fishing camp where fellow members, family and friends enjoyed many good things in “Mod-er-a-shun”.
George is survived by his four children. David, LeeAnn (Bob) Whelan, Pam (Tom) Schmitz, Dan, Sister Georgia Cicmil, Grandchildren Melanie (Chris) Winterfeldt, Meaghan (Eric) Sandstrom, Sam (Lauren) Whelan, Addie Whelan, Nick Whelan, Max Schmitz, Erin Schmitz, Danny Schmitz, Great Grandchildren Cameron and Forrest Winterfeldt, Harrison Whelan, Mason, Mikale and Miles Sandstrom in addition to many nieces, nephews and great lifelong friends.
George was preceded in death by his wife Anita, parents John Sr. and Senia Cicmil, sisters Helen Bulat, Melva Karapanza, Zorrie Lux and Dana Jatso. Brothers John Jr. (Kitzie), Nick and Mike.
A memorial service is planned for the Spring of 2025. More information will be provided at that time. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing, MN.
When reminiscing of his life, George would say “I’m Satisfied”. ‘Laku Noc’ (Good night in Serbian).
