Douglas Mandus Johnson, 70, of Nashwauk passed away on September 22, 2024. He
was born on January 7, 1954 to Milford and Doreen (Leske) Johnson in New York Mills.
Douglas grew up in Chisholm and graduated from Chisholm High School. At 19, he was
hired by U.S. Steel Keetac Mine to drive trucks, though he became a jack of all trades
before he retired. He was known around the mine as “Farmer”.
He moved to Nashwauk where he built a house on family land and raised his kids.
Douglas was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying a variety of ventures: hunting, fishing,
snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, water activities, ice fishing, and pulling tubes on Buck Lake.
He was also part of the Buck Lake Improvement Club and loved being at his seasonal
campsite, Polley’s Resort, in the summers.
Douglas had the gift of gab and enjoyed shooting the breeze, especially with ladies at
the dog park. He was an animal lover, giving special adoration to his dog children,
Buddy, Spud, and Chloe.
He is survived by his children, Jessica (Rick Meyers), Eric, Justin (Melissa), and Angela
Johnson; siblings, Ron (June), Greg (Karen), and Linda Johnson; his former wife, Linda
Johnson; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his cousins, nieces, and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nephews, Jason McDonald and Chris
Bastian.
A memorial and celebration of life will be held in Douglas's honor at Polly’s Resort on Lake Vermilion on October 12, 2024 at 1:00 PM.
