Dorothy E. Van Schyndel, 95, longtime resident of Hibbing died Saturday, April 13, 2024 at home in Hibbing. She was born November 29, 1928 to Arthur and Nellie (Tronvold) Schanche in Geddes, South Dakota. Dorothy spent her childhood in South Dakota and later moved to Minnesota. She married Glenn Van Schnydel on December 15, 1946. Dorothy lived in the Toivola/Meadowlands area, and finally moved to Hibbing in 1960. She was a devout member of First Baptist Church in Hibbing where she volunteered many hours, and taught Sunday School. A homemaker by trade, Dorothy took in foster children. She loved her family very much. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, and baking; “especially her bread and her amazing cinnamon rolls.”
She is survived by her 4 children, Kathy (Allen) Olson, Hibbing, MN, Connie (Jim) Fisher, Holmen, WI, Mark (Janet) Van Schyndel, Mt. Pleasant, WI, and Mary (Dennis) Rabe, Polk City, IA, two siblings, Mildred DeRosier, Duluth, MN, and Jay (Kathy) Schanche, Onamia, MN, 12 grandchildren, Jason (Rebekah) Olson, John (Shelly) Fisher, Jared Fisher, Brian (Michelle) Van Schyndel, Christian (Laura) Van Schyndel, Andrew Rabe, Joseph Meyers, Jennifer (Devin) Larsen, Cara (Paul) Balmer, Jessica (Christopher) Roush, Katie (Ryan) Ong, and Emmalee Rabe, 25 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, along with her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Nellie, husband, Glenn Van Schyndel in 2018, and her brother, Wayne Schanche.
Funeral services for Dorothy will be 11:00 am, Saturday, April 20, 2024 at First Baptist Church in Hibbing, MN. Pastor Greg Stevens will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
