Carol Ann Maciej, 84, longtime Pengilly resident, died Sunday, October 20, 2024, at her home on Swan Lake. She was born September 15, 1940, to Verner and Mary Ann (Zardo) Savolainen. She was raised by her mother Mary Ann and stepfather, George Williams. Carol was a 1958 graduate of Nashwauk High School and earned her teaching degree at Bemidji State University in 1961. She entered the Sacrament of Marriage with Terry Maciej on February 10, 1962, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Nashwauk, MN. Together, they raised their children in Hibbing before moving to their Swan Lake home.

She had been a resident of Pengilly for the past 30 plus years. Carol was employed as a substitute teacher for various school districts over her career including Hibbing, Coleraine, Nashwauk, and Grand Rapids. She also was co-owner of Maciej Art & Frame with Terry for 10 years. Carol was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Nashwauk and formerly an active member of Blessed Sacrament Parish while living in Hibbing. She was a member of East Side Neighbors, WDSE-PBS North Sounding Board, the Nashwauk Area Food Shelf, the Great Books Program, Girls Basketball Hoop-Club and Girl Scouts in her earlier years. She was extremely family oriented, and everything revolved around her family. She was an avid reader, loved having coffee, and baking as some of her many pastimes. 

Carol is survived by her husband, Terry Maciej, Pengilly, MN, her four children, Carrie Maciej Benton, St. Michael, MN, Brian Maciej, Mankato, MN, Amy (Todd) Rice, Hibbing, and Lynn (Kevin) Olson, South Range, WI, siblings, Bunny (Tom) Sarago, Cohasset, MN, and Gayle (Milt) Verant, Hibbing, MN, brother-in-law, Ken Ricker, Nashwauk, MN, four beloved grandchildren, Matthew Rice, Ryan Rice, Andrew Olson, and Jeffrey Olson, along with many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her, mother, Mary Ann (Zardo), stepfather, George Williams, and her sister, Jeanne Ricker.

Funeral services for Carol will be 11:00 am, Friday, October 25, 2024 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Nashwauk, MN. The Rev. Fr. Babu Mandagiri will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. The Rev. Fr. David Maciej will con-celebrate. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral Mass at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Nashwauk Cemetery in Nashwauk, MN. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
