Mary (Milosevic) Powell, 96, Leetonia, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2019. She was born to George and Katherine (Starcevic) Milosevic, January 15, 1922 in Leetonia Location outside of Hibbing, Minnesota. Mary married Edward “Jack” Powell on April 11, 1953 in Peoria, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in Secondary Education and taught school in Michigan and New York. Mary also worked at
Caterpillar Tractor Company as a librarian in the engineer’s library. She raised her family in Farmington, Illinois and later moved to Minneapolis. Mary returned to Leetonia in 2017 and made her home with her sister in her childhood home. She loved the Range and her Croatian heritage, she was especially proud to be a first generation American since both her parents emigrated from Croatia. Mary was gentle and kind, she loved to read, discuss all subjects and write poetry. Mary took classes at the U of M in her retirement years. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Katherine, husband, Edward, sisters, Annie Milosevic, Katherine Ongaro, infant sister, Frances, brother, John, and son-in-law, Michael Burns. Mary is survived by her children, Mary (Paul) Schoolmeesters, Edward Powell, Elizabeth Burns, grandchildren, Katherine JoAnne (Ron) Kelly, Jacob (Chris Garland) Schoolmeesters, Michaela (Riley) Laulainen, Emily Burns, great grandchildren, Lilyan Noggle, Paul Kelly, sister Josephine Milosevic, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins in the US and Croatia. She will be greatly missed by her entire family, relatives and friends in Minneapolis, Hibbing Leetonia and Illinois. Special thanks to Fairview Range Home Care and Hospice for their professional care and assistance during the past two years, Doctor Mark Versich. Thanks to Rose Backstrom, Paula Woodward in Leetonia who were good friends to Mary through the past two years and granddaughter, Katy Kelly who assisted in her care. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Reverend Father Gabriel Waweru will preside. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery immediately following Mass.
