Dalen Owen Sondergaard

April 24, 1953 ~ April 9, 2018 (age 64)

Dalen Owen Sondergaard, 64, Chisholm, formerly of Hibbing died Monday April 9, 2018 at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing.  He was born in Minneapolis, MN to Owen and Junice (Dalen) Sondergaard on April 24, 1953.  He grew up in Madison, MN, where he was an active athlete, a bright student, and graduate of Madison High School’s class of 1971.  He attended St. Cloud State University, spending his sophomore year in Denmark. In 1975 he began working asa boilermaker, following in the footsteps of both his father and brother. This would be the start of a thirty-one year career.  Dalen met the love of his life, Katie McCabe in 1985 and they were married in 1989. They moved to Hibbing, MN and started a family together. He built the cabin at Side Lake and enjoyed spending summers there grilling, boating, and spending time with family and friends. Dalen was a practical man who enjoyed simple pleasures such as reading current events, but his greatest joy was his family, especially the newest addition & apple of his eye, his granddaughter Adalyn Grozdanich.

            Dalen is survived by his wife Katie, children, Dana, Nikki, and Sam Sondergaard, granddaughter Adalyn, brother, Rolf Sondergaard, his aunt, Gert Rakow, brothers and sisters in law, Kevin (Linn) McCabe, Shaun (John) Briski, Mickey (Sheila) McCabe, Brian McCabe, Erin Ningen, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in law Peg and John McCabe, and sister in law Lori Sondergaard.  

            Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 pm. Saturday, April 14, 2018 in the Dougherty Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Olson officiating.  Visitation will be for one hour before the service. In honor of his love for public radio, Dalen’s family plans to make a memorial donation to Minnesota Public Radio on April 24th, his 65th birthday.
